A pilot project is already underway that will look at many facets of motorcycle crashes including the type of crashes , the severity of injuries, nature of fatalities, and the effect of safety gear. The real study however will take years to complete and is expected to analyze about 1000 motorcycle crashes. The last real motorcycle crash study was performed in the late 1970's by Harry Hurt and a team from the University of Southern California Traffic Safety Center. In that study the team analyzed about 900 motorcycle crashes in or around Los Angeles and studied some 3, 600 crash reports. The Hurt Report was released in 1981. With pressure from the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) the government has finally moved to address the problem of motorcycle injury and crashes in a contemporary context of 2008 and beyond traffic situations. In all the federal government will pony up $2.8 million and that will be matched by the motorcycling community to total $5.6 million. The research will be conducted by the Oklahoma Transportation Center at the Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. Here is a more in-depth look at bikersrights.com.
