Helmet Dabate Comebacks & Insurance

It was reported yesterday that a South Carolina trauma surgeon and neurosurgeon have completed a four year study on motorcycle crashes in their state.  They found that:

  1. “Motorcycles are intrinsically dangerous devices...” - maybe but not necessarily doctor,
  2. “Motorcyclists suffer fatal wrecks at 16 to 20 times the rate of other motorists.” - a little higher than the national average,
  3. The study found only 28 percent of 167 patients involved in motorcycle accidents wore helmets. - can't argue with that,
  4. Not wearing a helmet roughly doubled the chances of a patient having bleeding on the brain, a skull fracture or a spinal fracture, - again - no argument,
  5. “Clearly, you can still sustain a head injury with a helmet, but you would be almost twice as likely to have a (massive) injury (without one),” - I do not have their study so I have to agree that the study is valid,
  6. “Helmet use should be second nature for any motorcyclist, but if they chose not to wear a helmet, then they should help defray the cost to society for their behavior,” - I agree!
  7. “People who are on a motorcycle or mo-ped and they are involved in a low-velocity accident, this is where a helmet can make the difference in having a serious traumatic brain injury versus a mild traumatic brain injury,” - so slow speed scooters reap the best rewards from wearing a helmet,

The comeback comment was:

Doctor in your study did you calculate which accidents were not the motorcycle rider's fault. What we need is accident prevention not accident protection. Also doc - wash your hands  because more people die from hospital infections and the cost is far higher that any head trauma suffered by a motorcycle rider. The CDC states that the cost of motorcycle accident head trauma is half that of car driver head trauma. Doc, did you wear your helmet in your car to work this morning?

All valid points especially if you throw in the freedom factor.  I think the most important point in all of this is not whether a motorcycle rider should be forced to wear a helmet but if you choose not to wear a helmet then you maybe should be forced to buy higher insurance coverage to pay for your care if you are seriously injured.  This is not a ploy to make insurance companies rich.  It is rather placing responsibility where responsibility lies and to protect your family financially.  I have seen many motorcycle riders seriously injured and not have enough insurance to cover their medical expenses.  Make sure you have enough insurance of the proper kind to care for your family should you be killed or severely injured on your motorcycle.
