Vacations & Motorcycles or Scooters

Let's face it - riding a motorcycle in Utah in February, in the cold and snow like today makes you think of going somewhere warm - Mexico or Hawaii perhaps.  Almost daily I read of a motorcycle or scooter crash in Hawaii and other warm getaway spots so you need to be careful.  One of the best ways to see the sights at these warm destinations is renting a local motorcycle or scooter.  If you plan on renting a motorcycle or scooter on your next warm vacation make sure of a few things first.

motorcycle insurance

  • Make sure your insurance covers your use of a motorcycle or scooter - some policies specifically exclude the use of a scooter or bike because they are perceived as more dangerous.
  • Make sure the place you rent from is reputable - poor maintenance can cost you your life so ask around at your hotel and try to ensure that the local renter is a good one.
  • Make sure you dress to ride the motorcycle or scooter -  no flip flops leading to traumatic amputation of toes, a helmet is a good idea.
  • No drinking alcohol while riding a scooter or motorcycle needs to be said because balance is needed to ride correctly and with alcohol balance is the first to go right after... I will leave that to your imagination...
  • Do a walk around and start slow - make sure the brakes work, the horn works and you can corner the bike and stop in an emergency if need be.
  • Communicate to others where you are going and when you expect to be back - often a motorcycle or scooter can get you where tourists do not usually go and if you are in an accident or breakdown help may be unavailable.
Have a great vacation and try a scooter or bike - it is a great way to see the local area - but be careful to make sure your vacation is not ruined or worse.
