Motorcycle Helmet Editorial Misses the Mark

I wrote a recent post congratulating Oregon for their exceptional job in reducing their motorcycle fatalities to below half of the national average.  However, I recently read this Statesman Journal editorial declaring the fact that motorcycle helmet laws are responsible for the decline in deaths.  In fairness this article does make reference to the  Team Oregon motorcycle classes that are required by all riders less than 21 years of age. 

What the article does not address is that most new motorcycle purchasers are older. Let's face it - you have to have a little bread to purchase a $25,000 Harley and 21-year-old motorcycle riders generally can not afford it.  What this means is that inexperienced riders are older and that is the cause of increased accidents in this older segment of the motorcycle riding population.  That is why I think that every rider that gets a new motorcycle license or has allowed their license to lapse for two years or more should be required to take a motorcycle riding class of the caliber offered by Team Oregon.
