Motorcyclists aka bikers ask this question at the beginning of every motorcycle season—where can I get the cheapest motorcycle insurance? You know that is not really the question you should ask. The question you should ask is where do I get the best motorcycle insurance. Nothing cheap is rarely worth it—you only get what you pay for!

There are two portions of your motorcycle insurance that are very import—underinsured coverage and uninsured coverage. Both are important for different reasons.

Underinsured coverage kicks in when a driver hits you causing injury and doesn't have enough insurance to pay for all of your medical bills etc. In Utah, the minimum insurance for vehicle drivers is $25,000. Chances are, when you're in a motorcycle crash, you are going to be jacked up and $25,000 disappears quickly.

The other insurance is called uninsured coverage. Uninsured coverage kicks in when the offending driver crashes into you causing injuries and they have no insurance at all. Latest statistics show that about 20% of all Utah vehicle drivers on the road are uninsured—they have no coverage whatsoever.

What happens when an uninsured driver crashes into you—not much! Not much happens because they usually don't have any assets and you may well be out of luck. You will be forced to turn to your own uninsured coverage if you have planned properly and have it. 

Because there are so many underinsured and uninsured drivers on the road you should buy both types of coverage. Both types of coverage is relatively cheap and comes in increments of $50,000. 

In my opinion, all motorcycle riders in Utah should probably have $250,000 of each type of coverage. If you are in a motorcycle crash you're going to need extensive and expensive medical care. You need to look after yourself because no one else is looking out for you!
